★ ★ ★ ★ ★ On my last 2 visits I was served partly frozen beer (pieces of ice floating in it). On the first of those visits, I noticed that the refrigerated display cabinet was set at minus 2.5 degrees C, and therefore commented to the barman that the temperature was too low, and beer should not be stored at below freezing temperature. He said that he had been told that that was the correct temperature setting but would find a bottle that had not been in the refrigerator so long, which he proceeded to do. I suggested to him that he was mistaken about the temperature setting, and should check with his boss.
On my next visit, I was again served partly frozen beer, and this time noticed that the refrigerator was showing a temperature of minus 2 degrees C. I again complained to the barman, and insisted on being served a normal cold beer but without ice floating in it. The barman passed on my complaint to another guy sitting at the bar, who later claimed to be part owner of the bar, who responded in a shrift manner by saying: 'serve him a warm beer then'. Annoyed by his comment and abnoxious manner , I suggested to him that beer should never be stored below freezing. to which he replied that his temperature setting was correct, and that even Heineken recommended that their beers be stored at minus 2 degrees.This is utter nonsense, as beer stored at below freezing will, inevitably, freeze. The universally recommended temperature, even for extra cold lagers, is between 2 and 5 degrees C, and for normal premium lagers, the recommended temperature setting is between 6 and 9 degrees C.
Clearly the guy who claims to be the part owner of this bar, appears to know little or nothing about the storage of beers or even basic physics. Needless to say, I won't be going back again.
