Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology or Eijkman Institute (abbreviated LBME, in English the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology) is a molecular biology research institute under the supervision of the Ministry of Research and Technology of Republic Indonesia (KEMENRISTEKDIKTI RI). In honor of Christiaan Eijkman, a Dutch researcher who served as the first director and recipient of the 1929 Nobel Prize in medicine for the discovery of the concept of vitamins, while conducting a disease study of beri-beri in Batavia. Center, Indonesia. The Eijkman Institute occupies a Dutch architectural building on Jalan Diponegoro No.69 (same area/complex with Cipto Mangunkusumo Central Hospital/RSCM), Central Jakarta, Indonesia. In 1938, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the founding of this institution, the name of the Eijkman Institute began to be used as a form of appreciation for Christiaan Eijkman. He won the Nobel prize in medicine in 1929 for his research on beri-beri disease caused by a lack of compounds found in rice skin, a concept that became the forerunner of the discovery of vitamins. Due to Indonesia's economic and political upheaval in the 1960s, the Eijkman Institute was closed and combined with Cipto Mangunkusomo Cetral Hospital. Three decades later in December 1990, in commemoration of a century of discovery of vitamin B1 deficiency as a cause of beriberi by Christian Eijkman, B.J. Habibie, who was then Minister of Research and Technology, decided to reopen the Eijkman Institute. The Eijkman Institute was legally revived in July 1992. The laboratory began operating in April 1993 and was inaugurated by President Soeharto on September 19, 1995. The Eijkman Institute in the new era was led by Professor Sangkot Marzuki from 1992 to 2014. In 2014 until now, the position of Director of the Eijkman Institute was held by Professor Amin Soebandrio.
