★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not worth the reference to Borobudur and therefore also not the money. It's 2km away and borobudur is not very well visible due to a hotel and hill being in between (see photo) . Tree top viewpoint is perhaps better, but was already occupied when I got there. For a sunrise with views of the valley it's quite good though.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Barede Hill is located at desa Karangrejo, Magelang. The entrance is 15K IDR for locals and 30K IDR for foreign tourists. I have no idea why they double up the price for foreigners. Anyway, I went here for the first time to see the sunrise nearby Borobudur temple. You can see Mount Merapi and also Borobudur from this lookout point but you need a really good camera to get some photos as the temple is much further than I expect. There’s a tree house to see sunrise from there, but you have to pay for 50K IDR. It’s very cold, so make sure you bring a jacket. Use a flashlight on your phone when you hike up the hill. I almost fell because it was very dark.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is an alternative place to enjoy Borobudur's Sunrise but this place is different than Puthuk Setumbu.
Has less crowds than other sunrise spot and its well managed.
You may need to climb for about 15-20 min to the top so get here early in the morning to secure good spot to watch sunrise

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ recomended place to visit, different than other sunrise spots, bukit barede preserves the nature while making the place beautiful, the friendly local people also entertains the visitors with a traditional music (gamelan) and traditional dance on the way back after the sunrise.
*The price is good considering that the staff always clean the place so well, look after the visitors and helpful, i had a good experience with the staff, they’re in a hurry finding a camera tripod for me when they saw that was having a problem placing my phone when i want to make a sunrise time lapse, i’m so impressed and surprised on how they responded, it’s really nice and attentive. The staff deserve to earn it after all of their efforts to always keep the place clean, make the visitors comfortable and entertain.
However nature is unpredictable if sunrise doesn’t show up, don’t let disappointment spoil the journey, there are so many more things to enjoy in bukit barede, nature, clean air, beautiful panorama, good local hospitality and good local entertainment or you can sit down and relax a bit and enjoy a coffee/tea in the warung near the parking area with a village atmosphere before continue the journey.
