Di tengah malam yang sunyi ini, saya mendengar suara kakek sedang batuk berat. Saya langsung pergi ke kamar kakek. Ayah dan Ibu sudah ada di sana.
“Kita bawa ke puskesmas saja,” kata ayah.
“Sepertinya batuknya kakek berat, Yah. Kita bawa ke rumah sakit saja,” balas saya.
“Di desa begini mana ada rumah sakit, le,” kata ayah.
Ayah langsung ke luar dan menyalakan mobil. Saya dan ibu menuntun kakek berjalan. Kami akan membawa kakek menuju puskesmas. Kakek yang seorang perokok berat membuat saya khawatir. Jangan-jangan propaganda rokok menyebabkan penyakit dan tetek-bengeknya itu betul adanya.
Sampai puskesmas, begitu sepi, saya melihat seorang perawat pria. Ayah menjelaskan perihal apa yang terjadi pada kakek.
“Waduh, ini jantungnya berbahaya, Pak. Apalagi bapak bilang kakek perokok berat. Dibawa ke rumah sakit kota saja. Prosedurnya bapak harus pakai ambulan dari sini,” kata perawat itu.
“Dokternya tidak ada?” Tanya Ayah.
“Dokternya sudah tidur, Pak,” balas perawat itu.
“Dokter dan perawat punya kode etik kan, Mas?” tanyaku pada perawat.
“Biaya ambulannya 200 ribu. Dan ini juga perlu oksigen. Totalnya 290 ribu,” kata perawat tak menjawab pertanyaanku.
“Mas, saya ini mahasiswa kedokteran. Sampeyan cuma perawat minta ditampar uang berapa juta?” tantangku.
Perawat itu diam.
Saya dan Ibu menuntun kakek kembali ke dalam mobil. Saya memberi kode pada Ayah untuk meninggalkan perawat itu.
Kami akan mengantar sendiri kakek ke rumah sakit. Di dalam mobil kakek terus-terusan batuk.
“Sejak kapan kamu kuliah di kedokteran, le?” Tanya Ibu pada saya.
“Di jaman edan seperti sekarang, kebohongan memang harus dipadamkan dengan kebohongan, Bu,” balasku.

"The doctor isn't there?" Dad asked.
"The doctor is asleep, sir," replied the nurse.
