Kecamatan ini merupakan kecamatan hasil pemekaran tahun 2002 yang sebelumnya merupakan bagian dari kecamatan Tepus.
Secara geografis posisinya terletak di sisi Selatan wilayah kabupaten Gunungkidul, yang secara bentang alam terdiri dari perbukitan kapur seribu di tepi samudra Indonesia.
Potensi wisatanya terutama wisata pantai sangat banyak, beberapa sudah dibuka dan beberapa masih belum dikelola dengan baik, bisa jadi masih perlu investor.
