โ โ โ โ โ Belajar dan menghafal al-Quran selama ini identik dengan aktifitas para santri yang sedang bergelut dengan pelajaran ilmu-ilmu keislaman di pondok pesantren, sementara para pelajar dan mahasiswa lebih sering dikaitkan dengan aktifitas belajar ilmu-ilmu umum dan teknologi modern. Mungkin terbilang langka mahasiswa hafal al-Quran ataupun dosen hafal al-Quran.
Padahal kalau mau berkaca pada sejarah ilmuan-ilmuan muslim yang fenomenal dalam bidang filsafat dan sains pada abad pertengahan Islam, kita pasti akan mendapatkan segudang contoh orang-orang yang mumpuni di bidangnya, dan mereka rata-rata hafal dan menguasai al-Quran. Ibnu Rusyd, Ibnu Sina, al-Ghazali, Ar-Raziย dll, mereka adalah sosok ilmuan yang komplit, rumus-rumus fisika, kimia, astronomi dikuasai, tafsir, hadis, fiqh juga dipahami secara mendalam.
Apa rahasianya? Ternyata memang saat itu ada tradisi yang kuat bahwa hafal dan faham al-Quran itu merupakan โharga matiโ (tidak boleh ditawar) sebelum mereka beranjak untuk mempelajari ilmu-ilmu lainnya. Hal ini tercermin dalam tulisan Imam An-Nawawi dalam kitabnya โAl-Majmuโ:

โย Hal Pertama ( yang harus diperhatikan oleh seorang penuntut ilmu ) adalah menghafal Al Quran, karena ia adalah ilmu yang terpenting, bahkan para ulama salaf tidak akan mengajarkan hadis dan fiqh kecuali bagi siapa yang telah hafal Al Quran.ย โImam Nawawi, Al Majmuโ,( Beirut, Dar Al Fikri, 1996 ) Cet. Dan menurut pengamatan penulis, sejumlah mahasiswa yang menghafal al-Quran ataupun yang telah hafal, memiliki tingkat kecerdasan dan kreatifitas lebih dibanding lainnya. Rektor Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim (Maliki) Malang, Bapak Prof. Dr. Imam Suprayogo, dalam acara wisuda 2008 pernah menyampaikan bahwa dalam beberapa tahun terakhir peraih predikat mahasiswa terbaik selalu diraih oleh mahasiswa yang hafal al-Quran. Hal yang sama juga dibuktikan oleh keluarga Bapak Mutammimul Ula. Kesepuluh putra putrinya yang sedang menghafal al-Quran itu rata-rata menjadi pelajar dan mahasiswa terbaik di sekolah mereka masing-masing.
Learning and memorizing the Koran during this time is synonymous with the activities of the students who are struggling with the study of Islamic sciences in the boarding school, while students and students are more often associated with learning activities in general sciences and modern technology. Maybe it's rare for students to memorize al-Quran or lecturers to memorize the Koran.
Whereas if you want to reflect on the phenomenal history of Muslim scientists in the fields of philosophy and science in medieval Islam, we will certainly get a myriad of examples of people who are qualified in their fields, and they memorize and master the Koran on average. Ibn Rusyd, Ibn Sina, al-Ghazali, Ar-Razi etc., they are complete figures of scientists, formulas of physics, chemistry, astronomy mastered, interpretation, hadith, fiqh are also understood in depth.
What's the secret? It turns out that at that time there was a strong tradition that memorizing and understanding the Koran was a "dead price" (not negotiable) before they moved to study other sciences. This is reflected in the writings of Imam An-Nawawi in his book "Al-Majmu":

"The first thing (that must be considered by a science prosecutor) is memorizing the Quran, because it is the most important science, even the salaf scholars will not teach hadith and fiqh except for those who have memorized the Qur'an. And according to the author's observation, a number of students who memorize the Koran or who have memorized, have more intelligence and creativity than others. Chancellor of Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University (Maliki) Malang, Mr. Prof. Dr. Imam Suprayogo, in the 2008 graduation program, said that in the past few years the best student awardees were always won by students who memorized the Koran. The same thing was also proven by the family of Mr. Mutammimul Ula. The ten sons of their daughters who are memorizing the Koran on average become the best students and students in their respective schools.
