A holy place to embrace the glorious past and learning deeper about the history of Mataram Kingdom after Sultan Agung's reign. The whole hill is chosen by HRH Sultan Agung for himself and all of the Royal descendants from two kingdom; Surakarta & Yogyakarta. The stairways from down there to the last stop before the sacred gate to Sultan Agung is wonderful structure. Have a look at the opening days & hours if you really want to visit the holy grave of Sultan Agung which the soil is smells very nice like perfume. You need to wear traditional costume and barefoot to come up to each of the complex of all the kings. After all, this place is a real place where authentic Royal Javanese culture (and sacred ritual) very well preserved.

This was one of the most memorable experiences I have had after 4 years of living in Indonesia. If you are interested in experiencing old Javanese culture, there is no better place to go. I will never forget the experience of sitting next to the old men as they did their prayers over the tomb of the sultan, each one in his traditional clothing, carrying kris, and speaking Javanese. A few important points: 1. This place lies at the intersection of history, religion, and culture generally. It is not a tourist destination per se, and there is minimal signage explaining what things are. Therefore, some basic homework beforehand will make the visit much more enjoyable. It's a fascinating topic. 2. To enter the inner temple/tomb, you must change into traditional clothes (provided for a nominal fee) and put away all phones and cameras (photos in the outer area are fine). These rules are strictly enforced and I've seen people refused entry for not changing their clothes. 3. Best time to go is when they are saying their prayers at tomb of Sultan Agung. Please remember this is an extremely important religious ceremony for the local people and thus, it's critical to be respectful (e.g. quiet) and polite. Everyone there I met was incredibly warm and happy to answer questions, although very few speak any English.

Very nice place to visit, unfortunately we can't enter all places since is considered sacred place but still nice nonetheless. Just get ready to walking up on stairs but you also can get motorbike ride for about 20,000 rupiah one way

What a different kind of buildings here. They are adorable so you can feel a different atmosphere. You can see true loyalty to the King.

This is a royal cemetary complex for Islamic Mataram (Yogyakarta and Surakarta) Sultans on hilly grounds in Pajimatan, Karang Kulon, Wukirsari, Imogiri District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region. The complex is an exotic place with a beautiful Javanese architecture which can be reached by walking from the parking lot up through many concrete wide steps. Common visitors may come only to a certain height before the main gate to the mausoleums. Voluntary donation is required at the ground entrance. I came here with my family and students long ago, and there was a clean musholla (moslem prayer place). On the way from the parking lot to the ground gate there are food shops offering traditional foods.

Such an amazing spiritual experience to visit this place. Entering the complex by stairs. There are two part for Yogya section and Surakarta section. The main building is somehow old yet feels magic. Not so many visitor on weekday and only few merchants. Need special dress to enter and you need prepare some petty cash for charity.
