Jembatan ini dibangun oleh Staatsspoorwegen (SS) pada tahun 1886 sebagai jembatan darurat, disempurnakan pada tahun 1930, dan dibangun ulang oleh Djawatan Kereta Api Republik Indonesia (DKA) pada tahun 1957 dengan konstruksi baru, yang merupakan konstruksi jembatan terunik di Indonesia bahkan konstruksi jembatan ini hanya ada 2 di dunia

Jembatan lama sendiri adalah jembatan yang menjadi tempat eksekusi ribuan pejuang Indonesia selama masa penjajahan Belanda, di awal tahun 1949, lebih dari dua ribu orang gugur di sini. Di ujung utara jembatan lama dulu ada prasasti untuk mengenang peristiwa itu. Jembatan Kranggan ada 2. Jembatan sisi utara untuk jalur dari arah kota Temanggung dan sisi selatan untuk jalur dari arah Kranggan. Di sisi selatan bawah jembatan terdapat Taman Kali Progo (TKP).
The current bridge is a bridge built on the former old bridge that has collapsed to the bottom of the Progo river. The old bridge itself is the bridge where thousands of Indonesian fighters were executed during the Dutch colonial period, in early 1949, more than two thousand people died here. At the north end of the old bridge there used to be an inscription commemorating the event. There are 2 Kranggan Bridges. The north side bridge is for the route from the city of Temanggung and the south side is for the route from the Kranggan direction. On the south side under the bridge there is Kali Progo Park (TKP).
