★ ★ ★ ★ ★ An interesting example of a building which shows that Jakarta's history is a lot more than just Dutch colonial history. The An-Nawier mosque was built in 1760 by Arab settlers from Yemen, and has long been an important mosque for the sultans of nearby Banten - news about births and deceases of members of its royal family were announced through this mosque. A few objects in and around this mosque deserve special attention. First there is a beautifully decorated wooden pulpit inside, which allegedly was a gift from the sultan of Pontianak in Kalimantan around the beginning of the 20th century. The second one is the old tomb of a Yemenite migrant named Syarifah Baba Kecil.
