Santo Eligius lahir sekitar tahun 588 di Catelat, dekat Limoges, Perancis.
Sebelum menjadi uskup, ia adalah seorang pandai emas dan pencetak uang logam.
Eligius kemudian memiliki penghasilan dan harta kekayaan yang cukup melimpah; namun ia tetap memanfaatkannya untuk menolong para tawanan dan fakir miskin. Rumahnya, bahkan meja makannya sendiri selalu dikelilingi orang-orang miskin. Eligius juga sering menolong para budak dengan cara membeli mereka lalu membebaskan kembali. Salah seorang budak yang dibebaskannya adalah Santo Tilo dari Solignac.

Saint Eligius was born circa 588 in Catelat, near Limoges, France.
Before becoming a bishop, he was a goldsmith and coin mint.
Eligius then has quite abundant income and wealth; but he still used it to help the prisoners and the needy. His house, even his own dining table, was always surrounded by poor people. Eligius also often helped the slaves by buying them and then releasing them. One of the slaves he freed was Saint Tilo of Solignac.
