Bali might get all the tourists, but Indonesia's best temples are in Java. Candi Klero certainly isn't one of Java's finest ancient temples, but it is a worthwhile excursion for those staying in the cool, upland town of Salatiga and it dates back to the 9th or 10th century. It is relatively unadorned but it does have a beautiful and unique yoni with a most unusual motif- a turtle standing on the head of a giant serpent.

Did you know that around the city of Salatiga there are historical remains? These historical remains are the remains of ancient Indonesia. Klero Temple or Tengaran Temple, is a Hindu-style temple and is located in Klero Village, Tengaran District, Semarang Regency. This temple was rediscovered in 1995. The morphology of Klero Temple consists of the legs, the body, and the roof. The foot of Klero Temple is a square-shaped terrace. At the top of the terrace, there are protrusions that surround the body of the temple. The protrusion is thought to have been the base (umpak) that served to support the pole. Visitors can climb the terrace via stairs decorated with makara that appear to have been unfinished. The body of Klero Temple has one chamber (grbagrha) in which there is a yoni. According to information, a statue of Lord Shiva was also found at Klero Temple. However, the Lord Shiva statue has been moved by the Antiquities Office for reasons of safety. Hopefully, these cultural heritage discoveries will encourage us to continue to participate in maintaining and promoting our tourism at home and abroad.
