Pusat bawang merah tersebar di 11 kecamatan (dari 17 kecamatan) dengan luas panen per tahun 20.000 - 25.000 hektare. sentra bawang merah tersebar di Kecamatan Brebes, Wanasari, Bulakamba, Tonjong, Losari, Kersana, Ketanggungan, Larangan, Songgom, Jatibarang, dan sebagian Banjarharjo.
Sektor pertanian merupakan sektor yang dominan di Brebes. Dari sekitar 1,7 juta penduduk Brebes, sekitar 70 persen bekerja pada sektor pertanian. Sektor ini menyumbang 53 persen Produk Domestik Regional Bruto (PDRB) Kabupaten Brebes, yang 50 persen dari pertanian bawang merah. Budidaya bawang merah diperkirakan mulai berkembang di Brebes sekitar tahun 1950, diperkenalkan warga keturunan Tionghoa yang tinggal di Brebes. Hingga kini budidaya bawang merah menjadi napas kehidupan masyarakat.
Berbagai varietas bawang unggulan juga dihasilkan dari Brebes, antara lain varietas Bima Brebes yang berwarna merah menyala, rasa lebih pedas, dan lebih keras dibandingkan bawang dari luar daerah atau luar negeri. Saat ini, sekitar 23 persen pasokan bawang merah nasional berasal dari Brebes. Sementara untuk wilayah Jawa Tengah, Brebes memasok sekitar 75 persen kebutuhan bawang merah.
Di sektor pertanian sebagai sektor dominan, Kabupaten Brebes tidak hanya menghasilkan bawang merah, namun terdapat komoditas lain. Berbagai komoditas lain yang memiliki potensi sangat besar untuk dikembangkan bagi para investor baik yang berasal dari dalam maupun dari luar Kabupaten Brebes antara lain: kentang granula, cabe merah dan pisang raja, bawang daun dan kubis. Tanaman perkebunan yang berkembang antara lain: nilam, tebu, teh, cengkih, kapas, kapulaga, mlinjo dan kopi jenis robusta. Produk buah - buahan yang cukup signifikan antara lain ; mangga, semangka dan rambutan.
